It feels like summer is already here. I hope you have you have been putting your BBQ to good use already. This week I have included cooking instructions for both the oven and BBQ for some of the recipes.
It has been so good to have the spring vegetables finally coming in after such a tough season for our growers. You would have noticed the dramatic price increase for one of my favourite ingredients, kumara, after crops were wiped out earlier in the year, creating a massive shortage. Pumpkin has been the next vegetable to rise in price due this shortage, being the perfect replacement for the sweet root vegetable. Let’s hope for a perfect Summer for our growers!
Asparagus is now in full swing. We have it picked especially for On Your Plate by Cameron Glasgow and Gunilla Karlson, who have an asparagus patch down Longlands Road in Hastings. I hope you love it as much I do. Try cooking it on the BBQ. It transforms the flavour of the asparagus, giving it a delicious nuttiness.
Next week we have the welcome return of local courgettes, another of my favourites, and is also especially good slightly blackened on the BBQ.
